Ajax, a town in the Durham region, recently witnessed an extraordinary display of community spirit and goodwill as Pastor Frederica Walters and her dedicated team organized a remarkable community outreach program. Named “Christmas Across the Nation,” this event brought together various organizations, including the Durham Committee Action Group, and Creative Production, to create a memorable experience for over 500 refugees in the area.
“The primary goal of this heartwarming event was to offer asylum seekers, many of whom are experiencing their first Christmas away from their home countries, a taste of the Canadian holiday spirit,” said Gloria Small. The event gathered individuals from 21 African nations, providing them with an opportunity to experience the festive season in Canada.
“Christmas Across the Nation” featured a catered dinner, complete with all the traditional trimmings, ensuring that everyone felt the warmth and hospitality of the community. Keith Pascal, an integral part of the opening ceremonies where flags representing the 21 countries paraded, provided the rhythmic beats of African drums.

The program, was rich and diverse, consisted of a flag ceremony, a land acknowledgment, and the African Descendant National Anthem. Dignitaries such as Mark Holland and Patrice Barnes were acknowledged for their support, and a moment of silence paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
The event was hosted by Dwayne Johnson of Durham, while the enchanting vocals of Aphrose, along with the live band performance, captivated the audience.
As the evening unfolded, it became evident that “Christmas Across the Nation” was more than just a festive gathering it was a testament to the power of community, compassion, and unity. The event served as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how different cultures can come together to create lasting memories and support those in need.
