He was a proud Trinidadian Canadian who never said no when asked to help the community.  Last week Horace Reginald Thorne passed away at the age of 85.

A photographer, a community organizer, a tireless long-time Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana) volunteer and a loving family man, he will be remembered and honoured at the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate on Saturday afternoon after his funeral.

First there will be visitation at the Glendale Funeral Home in Etobicoke from 2pm – 3pm with a funeral service from 3pm to 4pm. To help celebrate the life of Horace Reginald Thorne, Consul General Tracey Ramsubagh-Mannette has arranged the reception area in the Sheppard Avenue Consul for a 4 pm Repass.

The funeral will be shown on a webcast organized by the funeral home (https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/67475). Donations in Horace’s name can be made to the T&T Association of Ontario. Cremation will take place at a later date. 

“Horace Thorne was more than a volunteer; he was a doer of any task, big or bigger that needed doing. He was also inventive, finding answers cheerfully, “said Black Action Defence Committee founder Lennox Farrell. “I can’t recall any instance in which he was annoyed, and peevish. He was mature, and sought answers, and what was for the better on every occasion, and for the betterment of our Caribana Festival and masquerade and community! With Respect!”

President of the T&T Association, a founding member of the Canadian Caribbean Photographic Art Collective, a photographer of all things Carnival and a Charter member of the Toronto High Park Centennial Lions, Horace never quit “helping out”.

Loving husband of 60 years to Grace (nee Lowe), devoted father to Jacqueline (Theodore) and Lincoln (Doreen), he was the cherished grandfather to Martin. He is predeceased by two sisters, Cynthia, and Sheila. Both Horace and Grace were born and raised in Trinidad. His family lived in Port of Spain, Grace’s family in San Francique.

The Thorne family first lived near Christie Pitts and Horace began his long career with the Toronto Transit Commission. For the past forty years Brampton has been home.

Horace will be deeply missed by his many family and friends. 

A visitation will be held at the Glendale Funeral Home located at 1810 Albion Rd. Etobicoke. ON M9W 5T1 on Saturday January 21st from 2pm – 3pm with a funeral service on the same day from 3pm tp 4pm. Cremation will take place at a later date.
